The Sound of Silence

I was compelled to share after the Lord gave me a glimpse of Him today. I was driving to a meeting with a brother to talk about the discipline of worship in our lives listening to We the Kingdom's "Holy Water" when I started crying while singing. I honestly don't know why! Don't get me wrong, the music hit my soul and took it on a journey, and the lyrics gave voice to the expressions of the Word in action. But as it sat in my heart I simply couldn't relate words to how God was moving me. So tears started flowing.

It has been said the truest expression of God's Holy Spirit in our lives is seen through unabashed emotion in the moment without time to reconsider the consequences.

Can you relate? Have you ever had an experience so shaped by the interruption of God in your life that the only result is an outflow of emotional praise? It got me thinking through and after my meeting that the "truest expression" of this response is ALWAYS marred by our attempt to define in words what the Lord Himself had written in our hearts. Consider the words of Isaiah in his prolific moment caught up to the throne room of Heaven after seeing the magnificence of God in chapter 6:5, "Then I said, 'Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.'" (emphasis added)

It's the filter that's the issue! The dam blocking the emotional holy water from freely flowing from our heart as "the springs of life" (Proverbs 4:23b) is our unclean lips! The devoted worship to our Savior in prayer cannot be expressed while bound in our flesh due to this problem. So God's Grace gives us our emotions to bypass the problem. And in the process allows us to be changed and refined more into the likeness of Jesus. And through His interaction in our hearts He breaks the dam of sin trapping the water allowing us to begin to learn how to express true worship to the ONLY ONE worthy of being worshipped!

The prophet Habakkuk was called to bring a message of judgment to Judah to be ultimately carried out through God's people being deported to Babylon. His call for enduring with persevering faith and worship would have been an anchor to those following the Way. His words were the capstone to my soul's enrichment today as I thought about the reverence I (need to) have worshipping my God.

But the Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him - Habakkuk 2:20

Be overcome...be emotional...be speechless even! But through it all be focused on who you are in light of a holy God who loves you and gave His Son Jesus to die at the hands of violent men on a splintered cross so that every unclean sin to ever leave its mark on your lips would be burned clean by the coal of repentance from the throne room's altar of grace!
